Longitudinal โ vibrations parallel to direction of travel. Examples: sound, ultrasound.
Wavelength (ฮป) โ distance from one crest to the next. Units: m.
Frequency (f) โ number of waves per second. Units: Hz.
Amplitude โ maximum displacement from rest position. Larger amplitude = more energy = louder/brighter.
Wave speed = frequency ร wavelength (v = fฮป).
Reflection and refraction
Reflection โ angle of incidence = angle of reflection (measured from normal).
Refraction โ change in speed when wave passes between media, causing change in direction.
Light slows down entering glass/water โ bends towards normal. Speeds up leaving โ bends away.
Critical angle and total internal reflection: if angle of incidence > critical angle โ total internal reflection.
Used in optical fibres for communications.
Electromagnetic spectrum
All EM waves travel at 3 ร 10โธ m/s in a vacuum. All are transverse.
Order (low freq/long ฮป โ high freq/short ฮป): Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, UV, X-ray, Gamma.

Higher frequency = more energy = more dangerous.
Uses: radio (communication), microwave (cooking/comms), IR (heaters/remote controls), visible (sight), UV (sterilising/sunbeds), X-ray (medical imaging), gamma (cancer treatment/sterilising).
