Key facts
Magnetic fields
Magnetic field lines go from north to south pole outside the magnet.
Closer field lines = stronger field.
Earth has a magnetic field โ used for navigation.
Electromagnet โ current through a coil of wire creates a magnetic field. Strength increased by: more turns, larger current, iron core.
Uses: electric motors, loudspeakers, circuit breakers.
Motor effect (F = BIL)
A current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field experiences a force โ the motor effect.
F = BIL (force = magnetic flux density ร current ร length). Units: N.
Fleming's Left Hand Rule: thumb = Force (motion), index = Field, middle = Current.
Force is maximum when current is perpendicular to field. Zero when parallel.
Reversing current OR field reverses direction of force.
Electric generators (induction)
Electromagnetic induction โ moving a conductor through a magnetic field induces a voltage.
Generator: rotating coil in magnetic field โ changing flux โ induced EMF โ current.
Increase induced EMF: faster rotation, stronger magnet, more turns on coil.
Simple generator with slip rings โ AC output. With split-ring commutator โ DC output.
Transformers
Only work with AC (changing field needed for induction).
Vp/Vs = np/ns.
Vp ร Ip = Vs ร Is (ideal transformer โ 100% efficient).
Step-up: ns > np โ Vs > Vp. Step-down: ns < np โ Vs < Vp.
Real transformers lose energy as heat in the core (eddy currents) and resistance of wire.
