LAN vs WAN
LAN (Local Area Network) — covers a small geographical area on a single site. Hardware is owned by the organisation. Uses UTP/fibre optic cable or Wi-Fi.
WAN (Wide Area Network) — covers a large geographical area, connecting LANs together. Infrastructure leased from telecoms companies. Uses telephone lines, fibre optic, satellite.

Home routers act as switch + router + wireless access point combined
Network hardware
Router — directs data packets between networks; connects LAN to internet
Switch — connects devices on a LAN; sends data only to the correct destination device
Wireless Access Point (WAP) — allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network
NIC (Network Interface Card) — hardware inside a device that allows it to connect to a network
Transmission media — copper (UTP), fibre optic, wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth)
Star topology
All devices connect to a central switch
Most popular wired network type
Advantage: if one cable fails, only that device is affected
Advantage: switch ensures data only goes where intended (secure)
Disadvantage: if the switch fails, the whole network fails
Disadvantage: more cabling required than bus
Other topologies
Bus topology (historical) — all devices on one backbone cable. If backbone breaks, all devices lose connection.
Full mesh — every device connected to every other. Highly resilient but very expensive (lots of cabling).
Partial mesh — multiple routes between devices but not every device connected to every other. Compromise solution.
