Development of Earth's early atmosphere

  • 1. Volcanic outgassing โ€” early Earth had intense volcanic activity releasing: COโ‚‚, water vapour, nitrogen, ammonia, methane. Very little oxygen.
  • 2. Cooling and oceans โ€” as Earth cooled, water vapour condensed to form the oceans. COโ‚‚ dissolved in the oceans.
  • 3. Photosynthesis โ€” early algae and plants used COโ‚‚ for photosynthesis, releasing Oโ‚‚. Oxygen levels rose over billions of years.
  • 4. Current atmosphere โ€” formed over ~3โ€“4 billion years.
