What both cell types share

  • Cytoplasm — where chemical reactions occur
  • Cell membrane — controls what enters and leaves
  • DNA / genetic material — contains instructions
  • Ribosomes — where proteins are made

Prokaryotic only — things to remember

  • No membrane-bound nucleus — DNA loops freely in cytoplasm
  • May have plasmids — small rings of extra DNA
  • Has a cell wall — but NOT made of cellulose
  • No mitochondria, no chloroplasts
  • Examples: bacteria
