Power formula and units

  • Power = energy transferred / time. P = E/t. Units: watts (W).
  • 1 W = 1 J/s. Kilowatt: 1 kW = 1000 W. Megawatt: 1 MW = 1,000,000 W.
  • Power = work done / time = force × velocity (for constant speed).
  • A device with higher power rating transfers more energy per second.
  • E = Pt (energy = power × time). E in joules if P in W and t in seconds.

Kilowatt-hours and electricity bills

  • Kilowatt-hour (kWh): energy transferred by a 1 kW device in 1 hour.
  • E (kWh) = power (kW) × time (hours). 1 kWh = 3,600,000 J = 3.6 MJ.
  • Cost of electricity = energy (kWh) × cost per kWh (pence).
  • E.g. 2 kW kettle, 0.1 hours (6 min): E = 2 × 0.1 = 0.2 kWh. At 30p/kWh: cost = 0.2 × 30 = 6p.
  • Reducing energy use = lower bills and lower carbon footprint.
