Context and writer's purpose
Author: Kari Herbert — daughter of the Arctic explorer Wally Herbert.
Context: Herbert revisited the Inughuit people in North Greenland in 2002. The text is from her memoir.
Purpose: To explore the tension between her Western emotional response (grief at the kill) and her understanding of the hunt's cultural necessity.
Tone: Reflective, honest, conflicted. Refuses to take a simple moral position.
AO2 focus: the tension structure — beauty of the hunt / necessity of the hunt / her grief.
Key language features
"glittered like stars" — simile. Creates vivid, beautiful image. Humanises the hunters, makes their return feel celebratory.
"cornerstone of the community's culture and survival" — "cornerstone" metaphor: the narwhal is the foundation everything else rests on.

I watched the hunters returning home, the women and children running out to greet them. One man held up his catch – a beautiful creature, pure white with dark wing tips. As the hunters came across the ice, the light caught the pelts and they glittered like stars. [...]
I was torn. I had been living with the Inughuit for almost a year, and in that time I had come to understand the crucial importance of the narwhal to the people. In this part of the Arctic, the narwhal is the cornerstone of the community's culture and survival. The meat and mattak (the skin, which is eaten raw and is rich in vitamin C) are a vital food source. The long spiral tusks are carved and sold or used to make items of clothing and implements. [...]
And yet, knowing all this, I still felt the inexplicable pull of grief when one was killed, a grief that I knew I had no right to feel. The men were battling for their culture, not against it.
Model analysis (Q4 style): Herbert uses the phrase "inexplicable pull of grief" to capture the irrationality of her emotional response. The verb "pull" suggests she is drawn towards the feeling against her will, like a physical force. The adjective "inexplicable" is crucial — she openly admits she cannot rationally explain the grief, which she then immediately undermines herself by acknowledging she has "no right to feel." This self-aware, conflicted honesty engages the reader, who is invited to share her divided response to the hunt rather than being directed towards a simple moral judgement.
