Context and writer's purpose
Author: Jamie Zeppa — Canadian teacher who went to Bhutan aged 24 to teach. The memoir grew from an essay.
Context: Zeppa is travelling through Bhutan for the first time by bus, on terrifying mountain roads.
Purpose: To convey the overwhelming experience of encountering Bhutan — its landscape and its roads.
Tone: Lyrical, awestruck, occasionally frightened. The writer is fully immersed in the experience.
AO2 focus: lyrical nature writing, sensory imagery, contrast between beauty and danger, the physical sensation of awe.
Key language features
"something vast and untouchable moving across the inside of my chest" — physical metaphor for awe. The landscape is felt as a bodily sensation.
"Bhutan is all and only mountains" — emphatic, declarative. The repetition of "all" and "only" creates a sense of totality.
"The road is a challenge to all assumptions of what a road should be" — understated. Then expanded through shocking details.

Mountains all around, climbing up to peaks, rolling into valleys, again and again. Bhutan is all and only mountains. I know the technical explanation for the landscape, landmass meeting landmass, the Indian subcontinent colliding into Asia and buckling upwards, but it doesn't explain anything, really. It doesn't explain what I feel looking at this: something vast and untouchable moving across the inside of my chest.

The road is a challenge to all assumptions of what a road should be. In places it narrows to a single lane, barely wider than the bus, and then there are places where it isn't a road at all, just muddy ruts, rock and then a drop of several thousand feet into a ravine. [...]
The road clings to the mountain. Every curve brings a new vista, snow peaks so enormous and so close I feel I could put my hand through the window and run my fingertips along the glaciers. I lean my forehead against the glass. The cold seeps through.
Model analysis (Q4 style): Zeppa's phrase "something vast and untouchable moving across the inside of my chest" is remarkable in its attempt to physically locate an emotional and spiritual response. The abstract (vastness, the untouchable) is given a physical location — "the inside of my chest" — creating the sense of awe as a bodily sensation. The adjective "untouchable" is interesting: it suggests something simultaneously transcendent and beyond ordinary comprehension. This is not just beautiful landscape writing — it is Zeppa attempting to describe an experience that language cannot fully capture, which itself creates an effect of wonder in the reader.
