Key facts

Area and volume

  • Rectangle: Area = length × width.
  • Circle: Area = πr². Circumference = 2πr or πd.
  • Triangle: Area = ½ × base × height.
  • Cuboid volume: length × width × height.
  • Cylinder volume: πr²h.
  • UNIT CONVERSIONS: 1m = 1000mm. 1m² = 1,000,000mm². 1m³ = 1,000,000,000mm³.

Gear ratios and other calculations

  • Gear ratio = teeth on driven gear ÷ teeth on driver gear.
  • Driven > driver teeth → turns slower, more torque. Driven < driver → faster, less torque.
  • Speed of driven gear = driver speed ÷ gear ratio.
  • Velocity ratio (pulleys) = diameter of driven ÷ diameter of driver.
  • Percentage waste = (waste area ÷ total area) × 100.
  • Always round UP for number of items needed — you cannot use half a paving stone or buy 0.6 of a tin.
