Displacement reaction — a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from a compound.
E.g. Mg + CuSO₄ → MgSO₄ + Cu (Mg more reactive than Cu → displaces it).
If no reaction: the metal is less reactive than the metal in the compound.
Extraction of metals
Metals below carbon in reactivity series can be extracted by reduction with carbon (e.g. iron in a blast furnace).
Metals above carbon (Na, Ca, Mg, Al) require electrolysis to extract.
Gold and silver occur native (uncombined) — too unreactive to react with the environment.
Iron extraction: Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂ (carbon monoxide reduces iron oxide in blast furnace).
Aluminium extraction: electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃). Very energy-intensive.
