Elements and compounds

  • An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. Cannot be broken down further by chemical reactions.
  • A compound is a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in fixed ratios.
  • Compounds have different properties from the elements they are made from.
  • A mixture contains two or more substances not chemically combined — can be separated by physical means.
  • Chemical formula shows the ratio of atoms: H₂O = 2 hydrogen, 1 oxygen. NH₃ = 1 nitrogen, 3 hydrogen.

Chemical equations

  • Word equation: names of reactants → names of products.
  • Symbol equation: chemical formulae, must be balanced (same number of each atom on each side).
  • Balancing: only change the numbers (coefficients) in front of formulae — never change the subscripts.
  • State symbols: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) aqueous (dissolved in water).
  • Example: 2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l)
