The pondweed experiment — method
Place pondweed (e.g. Elodea) in a beaker of water with sodium hydrogen carbonate (provides CO₂)
Shine a lamp at the pondweed from a measured distance
Count oxygen bubbles per minute — this measures photosynthesis rate
Move the lamp to different distances and repeat — each distance gives a different light intensity
Wait for the rate to stabilise before counting
Repeat at each distance and calculate a mean bubble count
Variables
Independent variable: light intensity (controlled by changing distance of lamp)
Dependent variable: rate of photosynthesis (measured by bubble count)
Control variables: CO₂ concentration, temperature, type and size of pondweed, same time interval for counting
Light intensity formula
Light intensity ∝ 1/distance²
Double the distance → quarter the light intensity
This is the inverse square law
Plot: light intensity (or 1/d²) on x-axis, bubble count on y-axis
