Types of neuron

  • Sensory neuron — carries impulse from receptor to CNS
  • Relay neuron — carries impulse within CNS (brain/spinal cord)
  • Motor neuron — carries impulse from CNS to effector
  • Effector — muscle (contracts) or gland (secretes)

Synapses

  • Gap between two neurons
  • Impulse reaches synapse → neurotransmitter released into gap
  • Neurotransmitter diffuses across → binds to receptors on next neuron
  • New electrical impulse triggered
  • Signal travels in one direction only
